Well, here’s an interesting topic to mull over! Is Dildo a City? I have to say that when I first heard the name, it certainly cracked me up! But seriously, it made me even more curious to find out if there really was such a place. I was sure I had heard of it somewhere before.
I immediately went on the internet and looked up its existence. I learned, much to my surprise, that indeed, it is indeed a town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Apparently, it was once a thriving fishing port and today it proudly calls itself ‘a home port’. The name of the settlement, which supposedly originates from a Portuguese word for ‘dill’, has been the subject of several jokes.
It made me wonder why they chose to keep such a name for their town. It must have been quite a liberating and bold decision. I’d like to believe that the fewer-than-500 residents have a good sense of humor and vibrators perhaps also a rebellious attitude! I’m sure the controversy it brings from those who are unfamiliar greatly adds to the small town’s character.
I can easily imagine the positive effect of this name on the locals. It brings the sense that their town is unique and however small, it has an identity of its own. If I had been there when the decision was made to settle under such a daring name, I’m sure I would have supported the move.

It provides plenty of opportunities to meet great people from all around the world and opens conversations to explore various cultures and approaches to life. I can only imagine how cool would it be to be part of this community!
It’s amazing how Dildo, a place with such an unusual name, has been able to stand up to prejudices and defy conventions. It’s amazing how it has managed to become a real tourist destination, thanks to its famous name and its bucolic surroundings. It has a beautiful lighthouse, secluded coves, sandy beaches, and a unique history. In a world of cookie-cutter places, Dildo stands out.
The town’s residents are quite adamant about the name. As the mayor once said, it’s part of their history and they wouldn’t even consider changing it. That’s a brave move in a world where cosmetic correctness is so prevalent and means so much to those used to living it.
While I’ve never visited Dildo, the thought of it fills me with a sense of amusement and admiration. I’d love to experience its culture and meet its wonderful people and even be part of that movement of liberation from machinations of modern life. What an awesome experience that must be.
The fact is that Dildo is a unique place like no other. It has gained a huge amount of positive attention and is admired by many people for its courage and sense of freedom. The town that isn’t afraid of having a good laugh at itself certainly deserves admiration.
But at the same time, I would also acknowledge that some people might find it offensive or inappropriate. It is certainly a name that could make anyone a bit uncomfortable, especially when hearing it for the first time.
I’d say that a positive way of looking at its existence is as a truth of the world. I mean, the name might not be what we expect from a city, but if it’s what the people decided to call it, who am I to disagree? I’m sure it speaks to something human, to a question of freedom and self-expression, whether it’s done in a conspicuous way or not.
In my opinion, no matter how unusual its name may be, I don’t think that Dildo should be judged by its cover. Each place is a reflection of us, of the human spirit. As a traveler I’d love to explore this city. Who knows, maybe this is the place I’ve been looking for all these years—a place with its own identity, a rebellious attitude, and a will to make the world a better place.
